Spiritual Warfare
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood,
but against…spiritual wickedness in high places.
Ephesians 6:12
The church is at war,
Like never before,
The conflict is ever around us;
This enemy host,
All set at their post,
Are bent on their plot to confound us.
By using deceit
With methods discreet,
They lead us down pathways immoral;
In keeping the norm,
They seem to conform,
So there is no reason to quarrel.
We cannot perceive
The web that they weave,
Unless we have trusted the Saviour;
Our soul must be changed
From being deranged,
By having the light of His favour.
His favour was shown
By leaving His throne
And coming to earth amid testing;
Defeating His foes;
From death He arose,
And all who believe Him are resting.

Your Appointment
And as it is appointed unto man once to die,
but after this the judgment.
Hebrews 9:27
We all have to die,
As time passes by;
A fact we have gathered while growing;
The point that we make;
The matter at stake,
Is where and to what are we going.
The Bible is clear;
Let’s give it an ear;
We are not as we were created;
The cardinal Fall
Has passed down to all,
We need to be regenerated.
We need a new birth
That’s not from the earth,
As Jesus was telling His hearer;
Yet not from the womb
As some may assume,
But from our Lord God which is dearer.
We cannot deny
That we have to die,
The prospect for saints is uplifting;
But if we don’t heed
What God has decreed,
Then hell will be where we are drifting.

Mentality
For as a man thinks in his heart so is he.
Proverbs 23:7
Character reveals the mind,
As our way of thinking;
Commonplace in humankind,
As our thoughts are linking.
Children’s thoughts are limited
Until they are older;
Lest they be inhibited,
They become much bolder.
Thoughtfulness must have a goal,
Always in our reaching;
Suitable for every role,
Fed with godly teaching.
Christians have the mind of Christ,
As the Word has stated;
Nothing else would have sufficed,
With His law mandated.
God has given us His Son,
Now in resurrection;
We can share the goal He won,
Choosing His direction.
Thoughts are moulded by belief,
Free from suppositions;
Gone is everlasting grief,
With no inhibitions.
There is lasting peace and joy
For the true believer;
Now devoid of human ploy:
Life with God forever.

Transformation
You must be born again.
John 3:7
Transformation is an act
We observe as solid fact;
Bible language calls this state
By the term regenerate.
Transformation of the soul
Is the Saviour’s lasting goal;
With no pressure on His part,
He can reach a searching heart.
Transformation is the word
When salvation has occurred;
God regards that person won
As His own adopted son.
Transformation, nothing dim,
Is a measured interim;
Growing as a child would grow,
Some more quickly, others slow.
Transformation is complete
When we fall at Jesus’ feet;
Resurrected; service done;
Glory to the risen Son.

Daybreak
Behold, now is the day of salvation.
2 Corinthians 6:2
Each daybreak awoken,
May well be the token,
Of what we have needed,
But never have heeded.
The Lord God has spoken;
The silence is broken;
To all in their hearing,
His judgment is nearing.
The Lord does not relish,
A soul that would perish;
He offers salvation
To those on probation.
Our sins are no longer
The cause of His anger;
His anger was ended,
When justice was rendered.
The Saviour was taken
And wholly forsaken;
Our sin He did carry
That nothing could parry.
The issue outstanding
That God is commanding:
Shall we bow before Him?
Or shall we ignore Him?
There is no excusing
For those still refusing;
The light all around us
Will bless or confound us.

The Call
Come unto Me, ye that labour and are
heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
Whoever you are,
At home or afar,
A message is steadily ringing;
For rich or for poor;
Devout or demure;
Come join with the saints who are singing.
They sing a new song,
To whom they belong,
Their sins are forgiven and banished;
They have a new life,
Not burdened with strife,
Enjoying God’s love He has lavished.
God calls everyone
To trust in His Son,
Who took all our woes and offences;
He now reigns on high;
His coming is nigh;
A joy that should liven our senses.

The Bible
Thy word is truth.
John 17:17
The Bible is historical,
It also is didactic;
By narrative or miracle,
Or elements climactic.
It is a complete unity
With every part essential,
Recording facts with verity,
Both past and providential.
It is the plan of history
In orderly perspective,
With absolute integrity,
Transparent and corrective.
It has a sacred authorship,
With writers as selected;
Like Paul with his apostleship,
And prophets so respected.
It tells of His creative plan:
The cosmos He commanded;
Of angels and the role of man
That harmony demanded.
It traces our probative span
From starting point to glory;
Of Jesus Christ the Perfect Man;
The God who wrote His story.
He heads a newborn human race,
Who trust Him for salvation;
So doing they shall see His face
With constant adoration.

Interpretation
Rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15
Interpretation of a text,
Or lucid explanation,
Should never leave a person vexed
In any situation.
The Bible writers certainly
Were borne by inspiration;
Both pointedly and mentally
They followed their vocation.
Interpretation must be seen
In light of all the factors;
If suppositions intervene,
They may instead distract us.
To understand the word of God,
The Lord provided teachers,
Who studied on the path they trod,
That truth indeed should reach us.
We thank Him for the Spirit’s light,
For His illumination;
That we should know God’s will aright,
In light of our salvation.

The Issue
When they knew God, they glorified
Him not as God, neither were thankful.
Romans 1:21
We all need God’s word,
Ingested when heard;
No other can meet daily issues;
Progressively taught,
It moulds every thought,
While blood circulates in our tissues.
It’s there to believe,
From Adam and Eve,
Right down to the last person living;
It has been ordained,
And never restrained,
Addressing each doubt or misgiving.
We shall stand alone,
When facing the Throne,
To hear words of merit or anguish;
To hear the well done,
Pronounced by the Son,
Or perish in hell where we languish.

Vanity
Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher,
vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
Ecclesiastes 1:2
Ecclesiastes, as we see,
Emphasises vanity;
As the writer one by one,
Sought for wisdom neath the sun.
Solomon the Jewish king,
Set his heart on everything,
He had women, wine and mirth,
All the riches of the earth.
He records for you and me,
In his long soliloquy,
Why things do not satisfy:
Simply that they all must die.
Last he makes a statement bold,
For the young and for the old,
Fear the LORD and do His will,
God will judge the good and ill.

Preservation
All scripture is God-breathed.
2 Timothy 3:16
Preserved in our writing
Are factors inviting;
Such things we would never have known;
As true revelation
For every occasion,
They stand like a mountain alone.
These strict categories,
And wonderful stories,
Conform to a cardinal plan;
They set out the structure
That followed the Rupture,
To bring lasting blessing for man.
His sovereignty stated
By what He created
Reveals a Designer supreme;
His love is extended
To man He’s befriended,
And this we should highly esteem.
Our chosen responses
Like human romances
Are made from the love in our heart;
Our Lord is proposing
Before time is closing;
His praises will never depart.

In Tune
Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5:16
It is more than a thrill
That we follow God’s will;
It is urgent in terms of salvation;
In our natural state
It is never too late,
For accepting His great invitation.
With a conscience in tune,
We are never immune,
From the prompting incurred by the Spirit;
We can harden our neck
When the Spirit says check,
Or submit to the prompt that is in it.
Whether part or degree,
We can never be free,
From the burden of sin that enslaves us;
But one look to the cross
Will recover our loss,
By His work on the hill where He saves us.
In His absolute power,
He will come at an hour,
As fulfilling a long expectation;
When the Advent has come,
’Twill be judgment for some,
While for others a great consummation.

Ascension
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty,
which was, and is, and is to come.
Revelation 4:8
Let us lift our songs of praise,
Walking with our God always,
Though the days be dark and drear,
He will banish every fear.
Let us spread the gospel wide;
Truth and promise verified;
Let our constant prayers ascend,
Knowing that we have a Friend.
Let our thankfulness be shown
To our Father at the Throne;
Thoughts and actions thus inclined
With a calm and peaceful mind.
Glory to our God Most High,
As the angels lift their cry;
Let’s repeat the glad refrain,
He is coming back again.

Three-In-One
Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts:
the whole earth is full of his glory.
Isaiah 6:3
God is one and God is three,
Always and eternally;
One in essence, three in role;
Both diverse and purely whole.
He designed the universe;
Free from evil, sin and curse;
Though not seen as evident,
We look to a great event.
He set life upon its course,
With perfection as its source;
But that image was defiled;
Sin defaced His wanton child.
God is always in control,
Of each part and of the whole;
Time itself is bound by grace,
Till it has no lasting place.
Grace and truth go hand in hand;
This we all must understand;
Grace must end but truth remains;
Either free or bound in chains.
Grace abode for six-score years,
When it fell upon deaf ears;
Then the Flood came as foretold,
Bringing death to young and old.
Grace precedes the judgment due,
As it was designed to do;
But with grace there’s mercy too:
Christ the Lord has seen it through.
God is one and God is three;
He has made salvation free;
We can choose or spurn the Son;
We shall stay as we have done.

Resurrection
This Jesus has God raised up,
whereof we all are witnesses.
Acts 2:32
He has risen from the dead,
On the third day as He said;
Seated now upon the throne;
Interceding for His own.
When His body is complete,
They’ll be gathered at His feet,
Each receiving their reward,
As their works do thus afford.
In the meantime those on earth,
Who’ve received a second birth,
Spread the gospel far and wide,
As they in the Lord abide.
So the church goes marching on,
Till its work on earth is done,
Till they reach that far-off shore,
Where they rest forevermore.
